One of the most important steps in preparing for the Junior Livestock Auction is reaching out to potential buyers. Buyer letters are more than just an invitation, they are your opportunity to tell your story, build relationships, and showcase the hard work you’ve put into your project.
We encourage all exhibitors to send letters early and, whenever possible, hand deliver them. A personal connection goes a long way and can make a lasting impression. Taking the time to introduce yourself and invite potential buyers in person can significantly increase your success on auction day.
Don’t limit yourself to past buyers—invite new buyers as well. Think about local businesses, community members, and anyone who may be interested in supporting youth and agriculture. Expanding your network is key.
Your letter should also serve as a way to market yourself and your project. Share what you’ve learned, the responsibility you’ve taken on, and the goals you’ve accomplished. If you are involved have a FFA vocational education (Ag Mechanics, CTE, etc.) project, be sure to include that as well—buyers appreciate understanding the full scope of your efforts. Additionally, sharing your involvement in sports, honor roll, leadership roles, and other extracurricular activities helps buyers get to know you as a well-rounded individual and makes your story even more meaningful.
To make your invitation effective, be sure to clearly answer the following:
-
Who you are
-
What you are showing/selling
-
When you are showing and when the auction begins
-
Where the event is taking place
-
Why you are participating and what this project means to you
Providing these details helps buyers plan ahead and ensures they don’t miss your show or the auction.
The more complete and thoughtful your outreach, the more likely you are to see success. Strong communication, personal connection, and preparation all play a role in making your livestock project rewarding—not just for you, but for the buyers who choose to support you.
As rule of thumb each exhibitor should be writing at least 5 letters at minimum.
You have worked this hard, don't forget to the most important part of your project, market your goods!
See you soon!
